What are contact lenses?
Contact lenses, or ‘contacts’, are thin lenses that you place directly over your eyes to assist with any eyesight problems you may have. Think of them as your own personal visual assistant. They help you see – but nobody can see them!
They are a popular alternative to eyeglasses in that no-one knows that you’re wearing them, and you can forget about them during the day once you’ve popped them on.
Contact lenses aren’t just all about eyesight though! You can also have lots of fun with them.
Fancy seeing what you’d look like with brown eyes for a day?
Colored contact lenses have you sorted!
There are also more wacky choices like cat eyes, glow in the dark etc., but today we’re focusing on seeing rather than scaring! (Now that explains all those crazy eyes you see at Halloween!)
What are eyeglasses?
Eyeglasses on the other hand are the traditional form of eyewear that we’re all more familiar with.
Much like sunglasses shield the sun when you wear them, eyeglasses assist with your sight.
People can find eyeglasses burdensome because they can be uncomfortable or make you feel self-conscious.
We all know the pain of going shopping for glasses and being unable to find a pair that suit your face!
It can also be difficult to get active with them and they pose a particular problem in these summer months when you have to choose between them and your sunglasses.
They also can’t change the color of your eyes either. How boring!
For all of those reasons, most people now choose to wear contact lenses instead.
What is ‘being ecological’ and why is it important?
There has been a lot of talk and discussion about the environment over the last few years and the impact that us humans have by merely being on this planet.
Being ecological means considering the effect you’re having on the planet through your everyday life. We all need to have a look at this and think about our impact.
Look at the products you use on a day-to-day basis.
Are there any products you could use instead that are more ecologically friendly?
Sometimes it’s hard to even know what option is best for the environment, so we’ve decided to hit you with some facts on what the most eco-friendly eyewear option is for you!
Are contact lenses more ecologically friendly than eyeglasses?
That’s a good question – and we have some good news for you.
You don’t need to ditch your contact lenses to be more ecologically friendly.
Research has shown that a YEAR’S worth of disposable contact lenses equates to 9.125 grams of plastic. How much is that? It’s less plastic than two credit cards!
In fact, when you consider how many pairs of contact lenses it would take to equal just ONE pair of eyeglasses, it could be between 10,000 – 50,000 contact lenses. Now that’s a lot!
The manufacture of eyeglasses uses up non-renewable oil resources, so we’ll stick to the contact lenses.
As the world grows more focused on the environment, there are people busy at work exploring how contact lenses can be recycled and this has already taken off in the U.K. where they have set up their first free national recycling scheme for contact lenses.
We’re excited to follow this development and can’t wait to see a similar scheme rolled out here for contact lenses in Canada.
What’s more, every pair of contact lenses we sell come in recyclable containers and as you’ll see below, manufacturers are doing their bit to make those containers more planet friendly and ecologically friendly too.
So now that we know what contact lenses are and how they are more ecologically friendly than eyeglasses, let’s delve into some of our favourites!
